Scientists have been surveying the surface temperatures of Lake Michigan since 1979 and this year they have noticed a record breaking high for the month of October.
While this is an alarming statistic showing the global impacts of climate change, on the bright side it is allowing the swimming season to be enjoyed later in the month of October.
With that bit of grim optimism, head out to Lake Michigan rocking this sweet Fresh Coast shirt
Two Lake Michigan buoys continue to give us a picture of much warmer than normal water temperatures.
A buoy in northern Lake Michigan and a buoy in southern Lake Michigan have thermometers that measure the surface water temperature.
If we take a five day average of surface water temperature at these buoys, Lake Michigan has never been warmer for this time of year. Consistent data goes back to 1979.
Here’s the graphic showing the five day average surface water temperature for the southern Lake Michigan buoy.
Notice the five day averages for October. The southern Lake Michigan buoy has an average temperature of 67° so far this October. If you scan left you will see the surface temperatures have never been warmer in October since records began in 1981. Continue Reading
