As we near the last month of the year, we swiftly approach two of the most anticipated holidays for most Americans. While time well spent with the family around the dining table this Thanksgiving, it’s often a little easy to put down a few hundred too many calories, which is kind of the entire tradition of the whole holiday at this point anyway. A few people will be trying to watch what they eat and spend Thanksgiving guilt free, but that’s hardly festive, which is why there are other ways to eat to your heart’s content while not being entirely overwhelmed with guilt.
The most festive and appropriate way to live your Thanksgiving at least a little guilt free are the annual Turkey Trots which happen in the days before and after Thanksgiving, most of them on the weekend after. Not only is a good 5k good for working off all that extra stuffing that you stuffed down, but many of these Turkey trots put proceeds to charities making them a win-win.
A couple really good sources for finding local Turkey Trots and other marathons are Running in the USA and Run Michigan. Both of these websites will help you find every race near you on your days off so you can get out there and plan out what races best suit you, they also have almost every single Turkey Trot in Michigan registered.
If you can make it to any Turkey Trots, then our top suggestions are the Toys for Tots Turkey Trot in Gaylord Michigan running this upcoming Wednesday and Thursday with a variety of different race distances with an adult ticket costing a meager $30. Another big Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot is the Ann Arbor Turkey Trot which starts at 8:15 in the morning giving you plenty of time to work up an appetite on either the 1k or 5k before running off to your big dinner. A final big Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot is the Traverse City Turkey Trot running either 5k or 5 miles with proceeds going to the Humane Society, TCAPS and and TART Trails.
For anyone who previously participated in the Petoskey Turkey Trot 5k, it is unfortunately discontinued as of this year.
But that’s no reason not to strap on your Running Hoodie and find the next nearest Turkey Trot with the above resources.
